It was reported to us that many of the buildings in La Libertad have to be frequently rebuilt due to problems with rot caused by the damp conditions. Reportedly the building structures (supporting posts, beams etc) have to be replaced every 7 years and other parts of the building have to be replaced up to every 2 years.
This is both costly and environmentally damaging. The problem could be alleviated with the use of wood preservative, especially for those structures in direct contact with the ground.
Suggested next steps – research availability and costs of wood preservative in Leticia and/or other locally used solutions. Discuss with the villagers relative costs of purchasing wood preservative, versus rebuilding properties every few years.
